How to Choose the Right DTF Gang Sheet Size

Pick the Right Gang Sheet Size — and Stop Wasting Space
A gang sheet is a single large DTF film sheet that holds multiple designs (or repeated copies of one design) ready to press. Choosing the right size saves you money, reduces film waste, and makes your press runs more efficient. Here's how to nail it every time.
Step 1: Know Your Sheet Size Options
Master Press offers gang sheets in standard widths and custom lengths. Common widths are 12" and 22.5" with lengths ranging from 12" up to 240" or more depending on the option you select. The larger the sheet, the more designs you can fit — but only if you plan the layout correctly.

Step 2: Measure Your Designs First
Before you pick a sheet size, get the finished dimensions of each design you plan to print. Measure or set your artwork at the exact press size — not the file canvas size.
Common finished sizes:
- Full front chest graphic: ~10" – 12" wide × 10" – 13" tall
- Left chest logo: ~3" – 4" wide × 3" – 4" tall
- Sleeve strip: ~3" – 4" wide × 10" – 14" tall
- Hat patch: ~2" – 2.5" wide × 1.5" – 2" tall
Write down the width and height of every design before moving to the next step.
Step 3: Calculate Your Layout — Design Count Method
Once you have your dimensions, estimate how many designs fit on each sheet length by adding up the heights (or widths, depending on orientation) of your images plus spacing.
The Spacing Rule
Leave at least 0.5" – 1" of space between designs so they cut cleanly without crowding.
Quick Capacity Examples (22" wide sheet)
| Sheet Length | Design Size (each) | Approx. Designs That Fit |
|---|---|---|
| 12" | 10" × 12" full front | 1 |
| 24" | 10" × 12" full front | 2 |
| 24" | 3" × 3" left chest | ~15–18 (2 columns) |
| 36" | 10" × 12" full front | 3 |
| 36" | 3" × 3" left chest | ~24–28 (2 columns) |
| 48" | 10" × 12" full front | 4 |
| 48" | Mixed: full front + left chest | 2 full fronts + ~10 left chests |
| 60" | 10" × 12" full front | 5 |
| 96" | 10" × 12" full front | 8 |
| 120" | 10" × 12" full front | 10 |
Tip: Smaller designs nest more efficiently. A 24" sheet can hold a surprising number of hat patches or left-chest logos when arranged in a grid.
Step 4: Repeating One Image? Here's the Formula
If you only have one design and want as many copies as possible, use this simple formula:
Designs per column = Floor( sheet length ÷ (design height + spacing) )
Columns = Floor( sheet width ÷ (design width + spacing) )
Total copies = Designs per column × Columns
Example: 4" × 4" logo, 0.5" spacing, on a 22.5" × 60" sheet
- Designs per column: Floor( 36 ÷ 4.5 ) = 8
- Columns: Floor( 22 ÷ 4.5 ) = 4
- Total copies: 8 × 4 = 32 copies
Example: 10" × 12" full front, 1" spacing, on a 22" × 60" sheet
- Designs per column: Floor( 60 ÷ 12 ) = 5
- Columns: Floor( 22 ÷ 11 ) = 2
- Total copies: 5 × 2 = 10 copies
Step 5: Mixed Designs — Stack Smartly
When your order includes several different designs, group similar-sized images together and stack them in rows. Here's the approach:
- Sort by height: Place your tallest designs first (they set the row height), then fill remaining width with smaller designs.
- Use the full width: A 22" sheet gives you room for two 10" wide full-front graphics side by side (10 + 1" gap + 10 = 21" — fits perfectly).
- Fill gaps with small logos: Left-chest or hat-patch artwork can fill the remaining horizontal space in a row dominated by a tall graphic.
- Don't leave large blank columns: If a row has a 4" gap on the side, check whether a small design can slide in without crowding.
Quick Size Selector Cheat Sheet
| How many full-front designs? | Recommended Sheet Length |
|---|---|
| 1 | 12" – 14" |
| 2 | 24" – 26" |
| 3 – 4 | 36" – 48" |
| 5 – 6 | 60" – 72" |
| 7 – 8 | 84" – 96" |
| 9 – 10 | 108" – 120" |
All estimates assume 22" wide sheet, ~10"–12" tall designs, 1" spacing.
